Of Mice and Men

John Steinbeck
The American Dream

The American Dream can be defined as "the ideal that every US citizen should have an equal opportunity to achieve success and prosperity through hard work, determination, and initiative". The American Dream is present in Of Mice and Men, particularly the impossibility of achieving it. George and Lennie dream of owning a farm with rabbits, Curley's wife dreams of being a movie star, and Crooks dreams of any situation better than the one he is currently in. It became apparent throughout the story that all of these dreams are just that-dreams, and that they are unattainable to their dreamers.
